IRC (Internet relay chat), is an Internet based "chat" protocol that pre-dates AOL im and M$N messenger etc, requires no ad-based software, and is free for anyone to use. For more information about the history of IRC, the culture, and some basic usage information check out the IRC page on wikipedia. This page gives a list of client software runs on various operating systems. Alex suggests irssi for linux, mac os X, or windows (with cygwin). For windows many people like to use mIRC. There are plenty of other options.. the clients section of the wikipedia IRC entry can give more information.

As indicated connections are SSL only so make sure that your client software supports SSL and that you have the correct SSL libraries. I don't think mIRC comes with SSL built in, but if you download an additional component (openssl i think) you can use mIRC to connect to our server.
